Privacy Policy

AnswerGap is a Chrome extension that shows whether AI search cites your website and runs an on-page AI-readiness audit. This policy explains exactly what data the extension handles. The short version: the AI answers and pages you analyze are processed entirely on your device and are never sent to us.
What stays on your device
- AI answers and page content. When you click the icon, AnswerGap reads the answer (or page) shown in your browser to find which sources were cited and to score the page. This analysis happens locally. We never receive, store, or transmit the contents of the pages you visit.
- Your domain and competitors. The website and competitor domains you enter in Settings are stored only in your browser's local storage to compare against cited sources. They are never uploaded.
- Local settings. Your daily free-usage count, your Pro license key (if entered), and a random device identifier are stored in your browser's local storage on your device.
Network requests
- The on-page audit reads the site's own
robots.txt. To check whether AI crawlers are allowed, the audit requests/robots.txtfrom the website you are currently viewing — a public file on that same site. The response is analyzed locally and is not sent to us. - License validation contacts our server. When you activate or re-check a Pro license, the extension sends to our licensing service (operated on Cloudflare) your license key, a random device identifier (used to enforce the per-license device limit; not tied to your identity), and the product name ("answergap"). Nothing else is transmitted, and the free version never contacts our licensing server.
Purchases
Payments for AnswerGap Pro are processed by Paddle, which acts as the Merchant of Record and is the data controller for your payment information. We do not see or store your card details. From a completed purchase we receive your email address and a transaction identifier, which we use to issue your license key and provide support. See Paddle's privacy policy.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or rent your data.
- We do not use it for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to AnswerGap's core function.
- We do not include third-party analytics or tracking in the extension.
AnswerGap's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store Limited Use requirements.
Permissions
- activeTab — lets the extension read the current page only after you click the toolbar icon.
- scripting — injects the analysis panel into the current tab when you invoke it.
- storage — stores your usage count, license key, and your domain/competitor settings locally.
Data retention & your rights
Local data is removed when you uninstall the extension or clear its storage. License records (key, purchase email, device activations) are kept while the license is active. To request access to or deletion of your license data, email us.
